Microsoft acquires video-recognition company Videosurf

Microsoft announced today their acquisition of Videosurf, a company that uses video and audio recognition technology to identify movies and TV shows, much like the Shazam and SoundHound apps do for music. A Videosurf app is already out (and comes shipped) on Verizon Android devices, but Microsoft is looking to dramatically expand the service’s capabilities and integrate it throughout Microsoft products.

On a related note, Microsoft will launch television service through Xbox Live which will feature close to 40 major stations at launch.

The company will also look to Kinect video search to enhance content discovery.
