Microsoft Says Windows Phone 7.5 Does Not Support NFC

Last week product manager of Microsoft UK Will Coleman had the taste of foot in his mouth when he said Windows Phone 7.5 supports NFC. He claimed it was up to OEMs to enable the NFC capabilities in the software. His exact words were: “As far as I’m aware, NFC is supported by [Windows Phone], but needs to be enabled by the OEM.” Microsoft has since stepped in to clarify and correct Mr. Coleman’s words.

“Microsoft would like to correct a previous statement it made around Near Field Communications. While NFC is not currently supported on Windows 7.5, it is coming. We expect NFC-enabled Windows Phone devices to ship within the next year.”

So let’s add NFC to the list of features coming in 2012. It’s likely we could see some of these NFC Windows Phones at CES in January. Microsoft has hinted at using NFC for some sort of file transferring for Xbox, Windows 8 tablets, and of course other Windows Phones.
