Windows Phone Marketplace Now Has More Free Apps Than BlackBerry App World

One of the gripes we hear a lot about the Marketplace is its lack of free apps compared to other platforms. This is particularly a complaint heard from people who come from Android. According to a recent report the free offerings in the Marketplace are growing, and have even passed BlackBerry App World.

In terms of total apps the Marketplace is still playing catch-up. According to the report Windows Phone Marketplace is ahead of only the Amazon Appstore in total apps. The Marketplace showed a 400% growth over the year, so expect those numbers to change in the next year as BlackBerry and Symbian development drop.

Another interesting stat is games. The Apple Appstore and Android Market are the obvious leaders in games, but when the Marketplace growth is put up against the others the results are impressive. After starting the year below everyone the Marketplace is now nearly 2,000 apps ahead of BlackBerry App World.
