The Bright Colors of Nokia Lumia Phones Explained

Most manufacturers like to stick to the basic colors of black, white, and silver for their devices. Nokia on the other hand has a much more colorful approach. The cyan body that started with the N9 and continued into the Lumia 800 and 900 has become iconic. Besides cyan, Nokia also likes to use  black, magenta, and there have been leaks of yellow and white versions too. So what’s the deal with all these colors?

On Nokia’s official blog Tiina Arras explains the inspirations behind the unique color choices of the Lumia line. She explains that the colors are derived from the CMYK color group. Graphic design students and newspaper enthusiasts will recognize these colors that were used in color printing back in the day.

The cool thing about the Lumia 800 and 900 is that the colors are not just painted on. The material is a dyed polycarbonate, which means the color goes all the way down. Unlike most colored devices that easily show chips and scratches the Lumia phones only show more of the same color underneath. Nokia spent a lot of time making sure the pigment is the perfect color and works in conjunction with the materials.

Right now the Lumia 800 and 900 have only been announced in Cyan and Black, but a leaked slide showed more colors may be coming. What color do you want?
