Microsoft Research Working on Text to Speech for Foreign Languages

Microsoft Research has come up with some interesting concepts over the past few months, including capacitive touch screens that can react through fabrics. Most recently added to the list is a software that can translate a voice to a foreign language. The user’s voice is analyzed and then output in the foreign language, still using the voice of the person who originally spoke.

This technology is most valuable for travelers in that it removes the language barrier, but it could also be utilized in helping new students learn a language. Other applications include improved turn by turn directions for GPS devices, as well as reading text written in different languages.

It seems Microsoft Research is on the cutting edge of some amazing products lately. I’m eager to see how this one develops.
