First NFC Enabled Windows Phone Announced by Nokia, Lumia 610

It’s odd that Nokia’s flagship device, the Lumia 900 didn’t launch with NFC support, considering the phone is supposed to be what carries Windows Phone into the third ecosystem spot behind iOS/Android. Still, the Lumia 610 looks like a capable phone, even if it is championing the Tango update which sees lower hardware requirements for phones.

The phone comes with full support for MasterCard’s PayPass payment solution, as well as Visa’s PayWave application for taking cardless payments. The NFC on the Lumia 610 is also compatible with other NFC accessories produced by Nokia, such as their Bluetooth headset and speakers.

The Lumia 610 is currently supporting NFC as a software based solution designed by Nokia, since Windows Phone itself cannot currently support NFC on its own. The Lumia 610 is scheduled to debut on Orange UK in Q3 2012, with no word on whether or not this phone could come to the US.
