Windows 8 Editions Revealed, Windows on Arm to be Windows RT

The inevitable question of how Microsoft is going to divvy up its latest operating system has finally been answered. Windows 8 on ARM processors will be branded as Windows RT, while Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 Enterprise will offer additional features such as virtualization and encryption. As we covered before, Windows Media Center will be split from Windows 8 as a separate add-on in the Windows 8 Marketplace. The Windows 8 branding is reserved for x86 machines, while ARM powered Windows will receive the RT suffix.

Windows RT will not be available as a stand alone product to purchase, but instead will be the version that is pre-installed on all new ARM processors. This changes the way Windows has been sold for the first time in decades. Office will be available on RT, but other desktop applications are left out of the mix.
