Nokia sues HTC, RIM, and Viewsonic for infringing on 45 patents

Woah. Nokia has just sent out a press release announcing they are suing HTC, RIM, and Viewsonic for infringing on a total of 45 patents in the U.S. and Germany. Nokia says the infringements are on proprietary technologies.  This includes antennas, radios, and power management on the hardware side. Software infringements include multitasking, navigation, app stores, retrieving email attachments, conversation displays, dynamic menus, and types of data encryption.

Nokia has been making phones longer than a lot of people, so it was really only a matter of time before they brought out the patents. Back in 2011 Nokia won a case against Apple that netted them €430m. Nokia would love to see a similar victory here to improve those declining quarterly results.

Not to mention that Apple now pays Nokia several millions on a yearly basis in patent fees.

Wow, I literally got the Lumia 900 today! Looks like I may have chosen well.. We shall see.

  • Poor Nokia. I bet they are really wishing they didn’t agree to wp7 exclusivity.
