[Editorial] #SwitchtoLumia when? How Nokia failed at announcing the Lumia 920

Yesterday (9/5) was a big day for Nokia. They announced the Lumia 920, a flagship Windows Phone 8 handset, and the Lumia 820.  The Lumia 920 has a gorgeous 4.5″ PureMotion HD+ display, an amazing 8.7MP PureView camera, wireless charging, and a speedy 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor. The Lumia 820 has a crisp 4.3″ ClearBlack display, the same speedy processor, and interchangeable multi-color back covers. So when can you buy one? Nokia failed to mention carriers, pricing, or release dates.

In the last two days there has been major events from Nokia, Motorola, and Amazon. They are rushing to get their announcements in before Apple steals the spotlight on September 12th, but this is where Nokia and Microsoft made a mistake. By scheduling an event before Apple you are allowing them to steal the spotlight. Nokia essentially has a week until nobody cares about the Lumia 920. But holding an event after Apple allows you to steal the spotlight from them.

This is why Nokia failed yesterday. Not only did they rush to show a product that clearly isn’t ready, but they did it for the wrong reason. If Nokia waited to show off the Lumia 920 at a time when they had more details they would have had something more tangible to show off, and they would have stolen the spotlight from Apple. Die hard Nokia fans won’t consider getting the iPhone 5, but those people have already been won over by Nokia. The people Nokia needs to help them out of this bad time are the people who consider iPhones, and they failed to capture them this week.

  • it really is a shame. apple will announce the new iphone with all the important info to go with it. how much, when etc. it usually ships 2 weeks after they announce. Nokia had everyone (not every1 but alot of ppl) focused on their reveal and it left alot of people scratching their head about there being no carrier, price or release date. WP fans know that the end of october is when Windows 8 is offical with the Surface etc but for everyone else who just wants a cool new phone, Nokia and MS may have just missed out.

And you never mentioned about the ongoing fake advertisements and still images done by Nokia in any of your articles.Your journalism is a big disaster.

They apologized for that, and released real footage that is just as impressive. It’s not a big deal.
