Windows Phone 8 users get access to millions of free WiFi hotspots

Last week at the Windows Phone 8 Microsoft made a big deal about something called DataSense. The tool will cut down on data usage with some tricky offloading and data compression. What it means for consumers is 45% more web browsing on your existing data plan.

Microsoft will be integrating acquired software from a company called Devicescape. The software is for WiFi offloading and hotspots around the world. With this built in to Windows Phone 8 users will have access to millions of free WiFi hotspots. The only downside is you will still have to manually connect to the networks, but in the future your phone will do it for you. This will be a great way to cut down on data usage while still getting the most out of your phone.

  • Seems interesting, but until we know where these millions of hotspots are located, we don’t know how useful it really will be.
