Microsoft says Windows Phone 7.8 will exist for “quite some time”

The news lately has been all about Windows Phone 8, but there are a lot of people out there with Lumia 900’s and Titan II’s wondering about WP 7.8. The news was pretty negative when Microsoft first talked about 7,8, but since then we’ve been hearing that it will include many features from WP8. Today there is more good news for the long term picture of 7.8.

Windows Phone VP Terry Myerson talked with TechRadar in an interview and had some things to say about the future of Windows Phone.

“I would expect both platforms to exist for quite some time, from a global point of view. Windows Phone 7.8 devices will span much lower price points than Windows Phone 8 devices, initially, and given the application compatibility across the platforms, it makes the ecosystem stronger to have more device and more price points. We value every 7 and 7.8 customer we have; we’ll continue to work for them as well but it is true that Windows Phone 8 is our future platform.”

That’s good news considering how some people with current devices feel about 7.8. A lot of people felt abandoned, but we think that when 7.8 comes out they’ll see they didn’t lose out on many features.

  • Microsoft keeps dakking that they value every customer, but we’ve known about this update for nearly six months now with no news on a release date. It’s obvious why consumers feel abandoned. They have been. For six months now. Microsoft should get into the habit of Google and Apple and not announce things until they’re ready a few days later.

Microsoft and its partners should try to be better about their updates. This is still a growing platform and they have to keep their users completely happy if they want to get close to iOS and Android. Phones get old quick and I understand companies have to move forward, but at least support them with quick updates for a couple years.

  • The biggest thing Windows Phone fans have been screaming is that more control over the UI by Microsoft would mean a better update experience, but it’s been everything but. I’d be pissed if I migrated to Windows Phone based on the promise of better updates.

I bought my htc titan 3 months ago and expected to wait to november for the 7.8. If I get it NeXT year I will og from impatient waiter to angry consumer and og back to android (I still have a Galaxy S2 running android 4.1 trough root). If I recieve WP 7.8 next year I will not buy a surface RT, most likely it will be the same story…
