Windows Phone finally overtook Blackberry in Q4 2012 market share

Blackberry and Windows Phone have been battling for the 3rd place spot in mobile market share for the better part of the last two years. Blackberry has been on a steady decline while Windows Phone has been on a slow incline. Just as Blackberry releases a new OS and flagship we’re starting to hear that Windows Phone has finally passed Blackberry in US market share. It has been a long time coming.

This latest report comes from Strategy Analytics. They say that Windows Phone overtook Blackberry in Q4 of 2012 for the first time since 2006. Q4 saw the launch of several high end Windows Phone 8 devices, so it makes sense that Windows Phone did well. 2013 will be a real battle. Blackberry has come to play and they are fighting to keep their company alive. Will their desperation win out against Microsoft? Or will Windows Phone continue to grow? Sounds like the makings of a good movie.

It’s hard to predict what will happen. BlackBerry has a huge crowd of followers who I am sure will be willing to give BB 10 a try. At the same time, Windows Phone is the next big thing in the smartphone world and already has some momentum.
