A real Windows 8-style file manager is on the way

One thing that many people have criticized Windows 8 for is the jarring experience of flipping between the desktop and Metro environments. If you ever want to check out the file manager you have to jump into desktop mode. Thankfully it looks like Microsoft is finally making a real Windows 8-style file manager that will come with Windows Blue.

The app looks a lot like the screen you see every time an app asks you to choose a file. The app bar across the bottom is where the magic happens. There you get options for creating folders, deleting items, adding items, and seeing details. The most important aspect of the new app is that it is completely touch friendly. If you’ve ever tried to use the file manager from the desktop on a touchscreen you know how frustrating that can be. Hopefully Microsoft keeps doing things to make the desktop obsolete, especially in Windows RT.

Windows 8 turned out being kind of a mess. They are trying to move into a completely new UI and I understand that is hard, but it really is quite messy. At this point I would rather keep my PC with Windows 7.

Metro Commander is a great Metro file manager that I recommend to Win 8/RT users.
As for not liking the Metro UI, simply install StartMenu8 (free on Cnet) and you’ll boot right into the desktop. And, you can customize your start button.
