Details emerge about the next Windows Phone 8 update, FM radio and double-tap to wake revealed

The next Windows Phone 8 update is coming sometime this year, but we don’t know much about it yet. The Verge has learned some news about what the update may include. The next update for Windows Phone will be General Distribution Release 2 (GDR2). Microsoft is working to bring back FM radio tuning with the update by activation FM radios on current devices. This is a feature that many WP7 phones had, but was lost with WP8. The Lumia 920 and 820 are among some of the phones that will get FM radio back.

Nokia is planning something of their own for GDR2. The Verge reports that Nokia will be adding a double-tap to wake the device. Instead of having to reach for the power button users will just double tap the screen. This will likely be a setting that users can turn on or off. Nokia will also include flip to silence, and the screen color settings we mentioned earlier. The update will be made available in the coming months with these minor changes.

What do you think about these new features?

  • Double-tap is a great feature! I remember using it in my N9…

  • I was about to search for Alternative Radio app, now i will wait for the update. Hope Microsoft doesn’t use the Android theory of releasing updates.
