Microsoft adds two-step verification for Microsoft accounts to beef up security

two step

We’ve been expecting Microsoft to roll out two-step verification for Microsoft accounts for a couple weeks, and today it has finally been announced. Over the next couple of days Microsoft will be upgrading accounts to enable two-factor authentication.

The service will work a lot like Google’s implementation. For devices that can’t go through the two-step process you will be able to get personalized passwords. This is what you will see on the Xbox. For device that can do the two-step process you will most likely get sent a code via text message.

A Windows Phone Authenticator app is already available to download. It can actually be used for other two-step systems, such as Google, since it used the standard protocol. Even if you don’t use two-step for Microsoft you might want to check it out. Check your account over the next few weeks to see if you have two-step enabled.
