Hands-on with YouTube for Windows Phone 8 [Video]

YouTube for Windows Phone is finally here. Now that the initial excitement has worn off a little bit it’s time to look at how the app actually works. First we want to point out that Microsoft is the one that made the app. Google just allowed them to access official YouTube APIs to create a full featured app.

As you might expect from an app made by Microsoft it has many Windows Phone design elements and features. The app is very visually appealing with flat icons and big beautiful video thumbnails everywhere. Navigation is done primarily through swiping, which will make Windows Phone users feel right at home. Many things can be pinned to the Start screen, including videos, playlists, channels, and searches.

The video player works in both portrait and landscape mode. Just rotate the device to see a video in fullscreen. In portrait mode you can watch the video while reading comments and even leave a comment of your own. You can also adjust the quality of the video right from the player. Overall the YouTube app is a really great experience. There are some quality 3rd party YouTube apps, but it’s important to have an official version.
