Microsoft confirms Windows 8.1 name, will be a free download


Not to let Windows Phone get all the news today, Microsoft hasĀ spilled some detailsĀ about Windows 8.1. First of all they have confirmed that Windows 8.1 is indeed the official name of the release. The codename Windows “Blue” will no longer be used.

The next bit of news is even better. Windows CFO Tami Reller revealed that Windows 8.1 will be a free update for Windows 8 users. it will be downloaded through the Windows Store, a first for the company. This is in line with Microsoft’s goal to streamline the update cycle and offer smaller more timely updates.

A public preview for Windows 8.1 will be available in June with an official release closer to the Holidays. That will be just in time for OEMs to start creating 8-7-inch tablets to compete with Google and Apple. To read more about what Windows 8.1 will bring head over here.
