Best Windows Phone apps and games from the month of May

Another 30 days has passed, and that means it’s time to wrap up the best apps and games from the last month. May was an especially great month for app and game releases. We saw a few apps launch that had been in the works for a while, and some excellent Xbox Live games arrived in the Store. Below is a list of the best apps and games from May in alphabetical order. Check it out to see if you missed any.

Angry Birds Rio

Angry Birds Rio is more than just a spin-off movie tie-in game. It differs from the regular version of Angry Birds with Rio themed levels and birds from the movie with unique abilities. You might think that this is just a crappy movie tie-in game, but that is certainly not the case. Angry Birds Rio has received many updates and continues to be fun.

BBC iPlayer

The BBC made some changes to the site to support streaming on Windows Phone. Previously it was not possible to use the iPlayer even just in the browser. Even though the app is just a wrapper for the mobile site there is a working live tile, but no offline viewing.

Death Worm

death worm

Death Worm can be summed up in one word: havoc. You control the death worm, which is exactly what it sounds like, a giant worm that kills everything in its path. The worm travels underground and occasionally goes up to the surface to destroy anything it can find. The more things you destroy the more points you get, and it gets harder as you go.

Facebook Beta

Technically Facebook Beta launched last month, but we had already posted the Best Apps of April. Facebook Beta is a completely redesigned Facebook experience. It follows closely with what you would see in the Android and iOS versions. While it might not be as “Metro-y” it has much more functionality.

Fitbit Tracker

Fitbit Tracker

There are a few decent Fitbit apps available in the Store, but none of them were built for Windows Phone 8. Developer Shane Chism noticed this and decided to do something about it. The result is Fitbit Tracker, the first Fitbit app to be designed from the ground up for Windows Phone 8. It’s a beautiful app that displays all your synced Fitbit information by using the official Fitbit API.

Hulu Plus

Hulu Plus

Hulu Plus is a similar service to Netflix, albeit much less popular. Like Pandora and Tumblr before it, Hulu Plus received a good amount of attention from Microsoft. Meaning the app is polished and fits right in with other Windows Phone apps. It’s not just a port. Everything you would expect is here, and it’s all bundled in an attractive design.

Until the official Instagram app is made available Itsdagram is the best we will get. Unlike Instagraph, this app allows users to do everything a real Instagram app would. You can upload images to Instagram with filters, view your dashboard, like photos, comment on photos, view your profile, and see what’s popular. It’s a great app.

Mass Effect Infiltator

Mass Effect Infiltator is based on the popular sci-fi console game. In the game you play as a Cerberus agent who is trying to take down the organization that he realizes is corrupt. It’s a very good mobile spin-off for fans of the original game, assuming you have a Lumia phone.

Monster Burner

This game is all about protecting castles from monsters. The gameplay is simple. All you have to do is torch the incoming monsters with fireballs and spells. The monsters come from the top of screen. It’s your job to keep them from reaching the bottom of the screen. It’s a fast pace fun with addictive action.

NBA JAM needs no introduction. This classic arcade-style basketball game started on the SNES and has continued to be beloved for its exaggerated 2-on-2 gameplay. The game is officially licensed so you can use your favorite teams and players. NBA Jam is a Nokia exclusive.

Rayman Jungle Run

Rayman Jungle Run is another endless runner game. Rayman is the character that you control. He starts out with the ability to jump, but as you play he gets more abilities. The game uses simple finger tapping gestures and on-screen buttons to operate Rayman’s abilities. Jungle Run has all the levels found in the Android and iOS versions, plus two new levels for Windows Phone.

Real Racing 2

Racing games on Windows Phone are dominated by the Asphalt series, but Real Racing 2 aims to change that. This game has 30 cars to choose from, a long career mode, Quick Race, time trials, and multiplayer over WiFi. Real Racing 2 is a Nokia exclusive.

Shazam is certainly not a new app, but it received a very big update for Windows Phone 8 this month. Simply load up the app and press the “Tag Now” to identify a song. It has a tile inspired interface that fits right in with Windows Phone. Tagged songs have links to Xbox Music and Nokia Music, and they can be shared or pinned to Start.

Splashtop 2

Splashtop has been helping people access their computers on mobile for a while now. Their most recent version, Splashtop 2, is now available for Windows Phone 8. The app gives users remote access to Macs or PCs with the Splashtop software installed.

Untappd is a social drinking application that lets you share what drink you are enjoying, or what breweries you like. Since it’s a port you get everything the iOS version has. That includes seeing your Friends feed, finding breweries nearby, earning badges, and of course checking-in with drinks.

When Winstagram launched it was the only Instagram app to work with Windows Phone 7. Since then Instagraph has gained WP7 support, but Winstagram remains to be a nice option. It doesn’t have slow upload times like Instagraph, and it allows users to create an Instagram account.

Zinio is a magazine app that can be described as a digital newsstand. It allows users to browse and subscribe to a wide variety of digital magazines, and view them right on their phone. The Zinio app for Lumia phones includes a new Reading List with a curated stream of articles from trending magazines.

I wish Google TV had Hulu Plus. All platforms have it except Google TV!

  • You know it’s bad when you don’t have an app that Windows Phone has.

    LOL! YUP.

Untappd is a terrible mess. Never worked properly sadly.
