Microsoft developer tools hint toward 1080p display support

The mobile industry has conquered 720p displays, and now they are moving toward 1080p. Whether or not that is really necessary in a handheld device doesn’t matter. The spec race will continue to push the boundaries. Windows Phone devices can’t be left behind in this race, and it appears Microsoft is ready to compete.

Former Microsoft and Nokia engineer Justin Angel has been digging around the recently release Visual Studio 2013 preview. In it he has discovered references to 1080p Windows Phone support. The files inside Visual Studio 2013 include skin support for 1920×1080 resolution.

The Verge is reporting that Windows Phone 8 GDR3 will add support for 1080p displays later this year. The resolution will open up the opportunity for OEMs to create devices with 5″ displays. Along with support for new quad-core processors from Qualcomm, GDR3 is set to give Windows Phone a big boost.
