Earlier this week Microsoft unveiled the Surface Pro 2 and Surface 2. These new tablets are upgrades to last years 10.6-inch tablets. While 10-inch tablets may be better for productivity, recent trends have shown that consumers love 7-inch devices. We’ve seen this with the Kindle line, the Nexus 7, and the 8-inch iPad mini. Microsoft currently has no horse in this race.
The Surface “mini” has been rumored for a while, but Microsoft has refused to comment on the device. With all the testing that goes on in Redmond you can be sure they are playing around with the idea. CNET reports that Microsoft is indeed working on a Surface mini, and it will have a 7.5-inch display. Earlier this year Microsoft updated developer tools for 7.5-inch displays at 1400 x 1080 resolution. Coincidence?
What is the best size?
Tablets come in all shapes and sizes these days. When the iPad first arrived on the scene everyone was pumping out 10-inch devices. People soon realized that a 10-inch device can be a little cumbersome to use and carry around. Now we are firmly in the 7-inch era. What works for you? Personally, I am a 7-inch fan. I would never go back to the big 10-inch devices.
