Earlier in the week we wrote a post about our “Top 3 apps from AppCampus.” One of the apps we included was a game called The Machine. I had so much fun playing this game that I just had to do a review. AppCampus is a program that helps indie developers get their apps published and promoted. With The Machine they hit the ball out of the park.
The basic premise of the game is to get a drop of ink to the end of each level. That sounds easy enough, but it really isn’t. This is one of the most challenging games I have ever played. It’s all about timing, thinking quick, and solving puzzles. There are a number of unique mechanics that will get you through each level.
The basic control is the ink drop will leap in whatever direction you tap. The ink drop can stick to some walls and slide on others. You can also attach to spinning wheels and launch the ink drop in any direction. While all of this is going on you are losing ink, which is indicated in a pen on the left of the screen. So now only do you have to navigate the obstacles, but you have to pick up more ink along the way in order to have enough to finish the level.
Some of the obstacles include spikey surfaces and spinning saw blades. After each level you are given an Angry Birds-style score. The more ink you collect and the faster you complete the level the better your score will be. The Machine isn’t an Xbox Live title, but there is a built-in achievement system. With 30 levels you will have plenty of chances to collect them all.
I really enjoyed playing The Machine. There are some levels that took me a long time to beat (as seen in the video above). Even the first level takes lightning quick reflexes to get the full 3-wheel score. If you like challenging puzzle games this is certainly one to check out. You can download The Machine for free on Windows Phone 8 and 7 devices.
