The search is officially over. Microsoft has named Satya Nadella as the new CEO to replace Steve Ballmer. The search may have taken a bit longer than Microsoft anticipated, but in the end they got their guy. Nadella takes over for Ballmer immediately at an important time for Microsoft. The Nokia deal is close to being finalized, and Microsoft is undergoing a massive reorganization. The launch of Windows Phone 8.1 is around the corner, as well as Windows 8.1 Update 1.
The 46-year-old Nadella came to Microsoft from rival Sun Microsoystems. He has had many jobs inside Microsoft, including Office, Bing, and other online services. He has been important in Microsoft’s move from traditional computing to a cloud infrastructure. That work now powers services such as Bing, SkyDrive, Skype, and Xbox Live.
Only time will tell if Nadella was the right choice for Microsoft. His skills and expertise fit nicely with Microsoft’s new vision for consumer products and hardware. Hopefully this is the start to a new Microsoft. We wish Nadella all the best as CEO, and we thank Ballmer for his many years of service.
