A closer look at the new Podcasts app in Windows Phone 8.1

podcast 8.1

About a week ago I reviewed a podcasts app called Casts. In that review I mentioned how the stock Music app leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to podcasts. I’m not the only one who has complained about this, and it looks like Microsoft has been listening. In Windows Phone 8.1 there is a new dedicated app for podcasts. Let’s take a look.

Bing It On

Unlike the new Xbox Music and Xbox Videos apps, Microsoft is pulling out the Bing branding for podcasts. There are a number of reasons why it makes sense to call the app Bing Podcasts. Currently you have to subscribe to podcasts from the Windows Phone Store. This works well enough, but the selection is not as good as other apps.

When you search for a podcast in the new app it uses Bing to scour the web. This will allow users to subscribe to many more podcasts.┬áIf you can’t find what you’re looking for you can simply enter the URL manually. Power features like this are what has made Windows Phone users look to 3rd-party podcasts apps. These changes are very nice.

Other features of Bing Podcasts include a standard pivot UI, the ability to add favorites, audio and video support, and sharing. Microsoft has surprised us a little bit with this app, but we are very glad to see it. Now you can easily subscribe to the Mobile Roar Podcast!
