Microsoft updates Bing apps to sync across devices

bing sync

Microsoft is making a big push with their Bing apps in Windows Phone and Windows 8. Instead of just being  the name for Microsoft’s search engine it has grown to include a whole suite of apps. Most of these apps are available on phones and the desktop, but they don’t communicate with each other at all. Today Microsoft has updated the apps to make them work together.

In the Windows Phone 8.1 SDK we saw Microsoft account sync in some of the Bing apps. Luckily we don’t have to wait for the launch of 8.1 to get this feature. Microsoft has updated Bing News, Bing Finance, Bing Weather, and Bing Sports, along with three new apps: Bing Food & Drink, Bing Health & Fitness, and Bing Travel. All of these apps include a new Microsoft login screen. If you choose to do this they will sync to their Windows 8 counterparts.

There are a few examples of why this will be useful. In the News app if you add news sources on your phone they will be ready on your tablet as well. The Sports app will sync favorite sports teams. Food & Drink will sync recipes. You get the idea. Microsoft is really trying to sell the “one ecosystem” idea, and this is a giant step toward making that work. Download all of the apps below, and make sure the Windows 8 apps are updated too.
