Mozilla ends their long experiment with Firefox “Metro mode” in Windows 8

After starting work on a special “Metro” version of Firefox almost 2 full years ago, Mozilla is shutting down the project. Firefox with “Metro Mode” never reached a stable build, but interest in the beta version have been so low that Mozilla has decided to scrap it all together. Firefox Vice president John Nightingale had this to say on the decision:

“We have to pick our battles. On any given day we have, for instance, millions of people testing pre-release versions of Firefox desktop, but we’ve never seen more than 1,000 active daily users in the Metro environment. When I talk about the need to pick our battles, this feels like a bad one to pick: significant investment and low impact.”

Firefox with Metro Mode was being built for touchscreen devices. However, it’s obvious that most users are just fine with Firefox as is. There is no need for a special version. If Firefox would release a Metro version in the Windows Store it may be more popular, but Microsoft does not allow 3rd-party browsers. Did you try out the Metro Mode in Firefox? Are you sad to see it go? What browser do you use on a touchscreen device?
