Well, who has it?? Any thoughts?
All I know is I want it!
No thanks. Surface RT works fine for me. RT is finally coming into form w/ all the updates.
Though i wish i could find a good stylus for it.
Will a regular stylus not work? I got a couple at Target for 15 bucks that work great on Nexus 7, iPad, etc.
Hey so, honestly I've not fired my RT up in a minute. What all has happened in the past month or two in updates that have helped out?? What am I missing?
You got me kinda excited here.
Yeah, I ended up picking up a Targus stylus ($15) and Adonit Jot Pro ($30) to test out.
I also had one of those hard rubber angled one that was a promo w/ something purchased on amazon. Those kind suck.
The Targus works great. The Adonit is good, but it's one of the plastic disk kind and has a tenancy to slide a tiny bit on the glass. Nothing major, just a minor nuance, so I'm going to return that and stick w/ the Targus. Really any soft rubber ball type should work.
As for the updates, yes MS has made some significant strides w/ RT. Especially w/ the firmware updates. Seems like the wifi and audio bugs are finally fixed. Metro is really fluid now. Now if they can just get the dang email app to accept pop3 - I've read rumors of outlook for RT in the works.
I still don't see RT lasting, but the tablet itself is finally on par w/ the ipad in overall functionality, to me at least.
Now with the stylus I can finally use the writing keyboard how it's meant to be used.
Nice! I ran all the windows and store updates last night, but haven't played much with it beyond that. Sweet.
We shoudl have one in any day now. We need to test on windows 8, so I said get the Surface pro.
Yeah I'm hoping I can swing the same thing.
Played with one at best buy. The screen size seemed smaller than I thought it would be....
Gonna go back and tinker more with it before I decide
I have one. The 128gb version. I love it.
Here are my complaints about it - The weight. 2 lbls is too heavy to hold for any extended period of time. Like laying down in bed trying to read is not comfortable at all. USB port should be on the same side as the charge port because if you have something in the USB port and you are charging the tablet, you can not stand it up in portrait mode. It does get warm when playing a game, not scorching hot but warm. And the fan can be loud when it's fully running (like playing a game). Also, (I know this isn't a 'surface pro' issue per se) I do not like the inconsistencies of Win8 (hopefully this will be fixed over time with updates and more Win8 apps). Example. Exit Weather app, puts you back at the tiles. Exit Word, puts you back at the desktop. Open a PDF from the desktop, and then exit the pdf viewer, puts you back at the tiles. And a lot of apps aren't touch friendly yet. Like chrome. No gestures like you have for IE or even Chrome on Android. And last complaint (and most annoying to me). The charge port. It's annoying to get the plug in the charge port. And the surface pro has a slanted side, so if you have the tablet laying on a table, you can not get the cable in to save a puppies life. The cable shouldn't be that difficult to get in. They should take a page from the Mac Book Pro, you don't even have to line that up and it snaps in to place. I hope that they release a docking station. I would rather use that than trying to screw with the charge cable.
I didn't list battery life as a complaint because, for me, it's not much of a complaint. I get about as much battery life out of it as I do my laptop and, so far, I've been around power in case i'm running low. You would be screwed if you wanted to use it for a 5 hr flight if you had no power available, but then again you would be screwed if you had a laptop too. I know - 'dude, the surface is so LAME. I can use my iPad a bi-gillion hours. APPL3 RULZ!' - Except that iPad isn't a full blown PC. You can't run Visual Studio or do Photoshop etc. Heck, you can't even play a mkv file on that thing. lol If battery life is a concern, you could look at the Acer W700 (some drawbacks and doesn't come with a pen - but I barely ever use the pen with the pro)
With the complaints, I would still buy the surface pro in a heart beat. It's the best overall choice of tablets. It allows me the flexibility of a full PC in the portability of tablet without the bulk of a laptop/ultrabook.
One last thing. Playing with it Best Buy... for me, I couldn't get a feel for the weight as they had it attached to one of those curly phone cord things. Also, I don't use the touch cover with mine. So if you are judging your purchase on how you can type on the touch cover, I wouldn't. Some love it, some hate it. I don't like it. And I don't like that I have to remove it it I want to lay the tablet down (because the keys are facing out when it's folded back) I use a wedge keyboard. To me it's easier to type on and I don't have to 'remove' it when I want to use the tablet laying down.
I hope this helps
Oh, and I've had it about 3 weeks now and use it almost every day.
Hey nice write up, that does help. Perhaps the most informative feedback we've seen yet. It sounds like most everything else - a give and take. Sounds great though, and something I might have to check out further. I have the surface RT and it's pretty good but I don't much use it. I would find much much much more use out of a full blown install.
Battery for me is kinda a big deal which is why I was sad to hear the ratings on the Pro - but if its that of a standard laptop.. well.. I guess it could be worse.
