How could Lumia sell more phones?

I love windows phones SO much. The operating system is so much better designed than any other phone. Now with the Lumia's, WP finally has some truly gorgeous phones, but I'm VERY worried about their low sales figures. I dont want WP to fail. I want it to catch on MUCH faster than it has been. SO this forum is a place for people to brainstorm ideas how they think Nokia & windows phone can sell more phones!

My first suggestion to Nokia would be to STOP leading all their marketing with the cyan phone. Sure, cyan is an ok color, and lots of people will want to buy it, but there are going to be just as many people or MORE who DON'T like it, and DONT want an electric-blue phone. There is NO WAY in the WORLD it's going to be more popular than black. Yet I havent seen ANY Nokia ads that feature the black phone. They dont even show it. It's ALL cyan. And the current picture on the windows phone site is a cyan lumia 900 with bright red tiles. EW! If they focused on advertising the black phone, they could show off all the different colored themes you can use, because everything goes with black. I gurantee you, there are people out there who think the Nokia 900 only comes in bright cyan.

My second suggestion comes from my job. It's my job to make people buy stuff without ever saying a word to them, and one steadfast rule is that most people (obviously not early WP fans like us) are very uncomfortable with drastic change, it scares them. They like gradual change. And when you DO give them a drastic change -- which is what the WP interface is -- you have to ease them into it. The best way to do this is show them what they're already familiar with,

I will bet my job that the reason WP has been so slow to catch on, is that it made some huge changes that people dont like, and they arent even AWARE of why they dont like it, they just know something is different, and "wrong" and scary....

WP is the first operating system designed FOR a phone. What apple and android have done is take the Desktop wallpaper and icons that have been a part of EVERY computer and laptop anyone has ever had, and simply crammed them down to fit on a tiny litte screen. WP realized that this made for a messy, hard to read, cramped screen...and so they threw it out and started from scratch.

What they came up with instead is brilliant! No desktop wallpaper to clutter anything up, and bigger, easier to read LIVE tiles. Of course WE all realize how much better this works on a phone screen, but everyone else looks at it and just sees that something is very different, something is missing, something important, something they've come to depend on....but they dont think about it enough to know what it is...they just leave feeling that something about the phone isn't right.

Its my job to know how people think and why they make the choices they do, and the reason they are shying away from WP is because they subconciously see that THERE'S NO WALLPAPER!!!!!! That fixture of ALL personal computing for what, 20 years?

One of the reasons iphone took off were those ads with a gorgeous piece of hardware showing that gorgeous photo of the clown fish in the translucent glowing green anemones. It was simply beautiful.

WP & Lumia can EASILY fix this disconnect that people are having with their phones, by showing the UNLOCK screen with an equally gorgeous picture. It will give people that lifeline to their cherished wallpaper that they NEED to feel comfortable with a phone that is otherwise a huge and uncomfortable change for them. PLUS the unlock screen is one of WP coolest features and selling points.

They should produce ads showing a close up of the unlock screen, with a GORGEOUS picture, zoom in, to show the updating information at the bottom. Show that a lot of the time, all you have to do with your phone is look at the unlock screen to find out what you want to know.

And that little bounce the picture makes -- that is SO COOL. Its the true definition of intuitive. Think about the iphone, in comparison, which has a big button that says SLIDE TO UNLOCK. ....THAT's NOT INTUITIVE! That's instructions! the opposite of intuitive. Thw WP, on the other hand, makes this playful little bounce, that's fun, and you can see a peek of something behind it, so you automatically know to slide the screen up WITHOUT any instruction. You just get it automatically. THAT is what intuitive means.

They did these things, and they'd sell MILLIONS more phones.

AElephants, I'm guessing you work in marketing? lol

I agree that showing the black color option on maybe the product screen at the end of ads to show it is available would be a good idea, but most of the ads focus on how much the Lumia stands out and is unique and cool and different. They want people to embrace that exotic feeling of something that isn't the norm. Using the black phone in this case would be counter-productive.

Honestly, to sell more phones I think they should make a rainbow assortment of phones and use all the different colors to appeal to people. It adds that bit of uniqueness and personalization Windows lacks compared to Android.

Yes, I do work in marketing. And I'm sure you are right that that is their thinking. I'm saying that their thinking is a mistake. Very few consumers embrace drastic change easily...you have to ease them into it. The same reason the PT Cruiser never caught on and was discontinued. Some people embraced it because it was new & different, but not enough people to justify continuing to make it.

The vast majority of consumers are very conservative in their purchases. You have to give them something they are familiar with to make them feel safe with the other changes. WP already does that. The unlock screen will feel very familiar and safe, but also very new and exciting...but they never show it. It is a big mistake.

I don't think there is really a good way to approach "This is just like your phone, but better." WP7 is very different and there isn't much that can be shown as similar but more efficient that is hardware specific. Maybe focusing on the dedicated camera button, or the usage of the three capacitive buttons at the bottom would be a good idea? I really think Nokia should focus on the 900 and not specifically on the software for their commercials.

To show off the OS as a whole, I think they should not focus on hardware and should approach advertising the OS in a manner similar to Apple has done. The Lumia 800 site does a good job of showing off the OS.

I believe that Nokia could quit with the "Your iPhone/Android/Blackberry phone was awful!" mantra. They should illustrate the uniqueness of the OS, not how much better it is than your current phone! I don't know, if I didn't like Windows Phone I would be annoyed that Nokia is telling me how bad my phone is

I think the Cyan is an eye catcher, but I'm sure they could throw in a promotional shot of the black, cyan and white versions.

I disagree, they should focus on the hardware but they could also advertise the software in equal measure.

I think the 900 is only available in Black and Cyan. The 800 is the one that comes in a white coat of paint.

Nokia will release some other colors like pink, yellow and such later on, at least that's what i've seen from the pictures floating around. I hope they come out with the White one, but i would probably have the Matte Black anyways, i really like it.

Do you have a source for that? I know the Lumia 800 has had a leak like that but I haven't seen a leak for the 900
