I would look at Seidio, they make great cases.
Otterbox all the way. I had one for my captivate and I'll get one for my Lumia as soon as they're available.

The body is made of a special material, so scratches should be the same color as the surface. I would try to get a transparent case if you want it to last and still look good
I use Otterbox and have had 3 cases break withing the past 8 months. The customer service is pretty nice, but twice I had my order messed up and once my case was on backorder and didn't ship for 2 weeks. Overall, it's a good case, but if you're tough on cases in general, you might find one that is more unibody and therefore more stable.
Yeah, I've never used cases. I prefer to keep all my devices naked unless the device's actual manufacturer releases a case specifically designed for their device. Like with the iPhone bumpers, or the new Nokia Lumia gel cases. Other than that, I feel like third party cases always hinder the user experience too much.
I have been using a snap case I found for super cheap on Amazon. It has a nice image on it and it has protected my phone. I've dropped my phone before and the case was scratched instead of my phone. It was worth adding a little bulk to get that protection and I haven't noticed any change in usability.
I bought my dad the real cheapo one from Amazon and was surprised at how nice it fit. It's a slim, tight-fitting hard case that has a slightly rubberized texture to it to add some grip without bulk. Even if you hate it, you're only out $3 with free shipping.
Amazon always seems to have the best deals on cheap, affordable cases.

When I had an iPod I bought an Incipio SILICRYLIC case. They make cases for a lot of smartphones now. I definitly recommend.
