    Updates on Windows Mobile

    hey guys and gals...
I am starting this thread to have a clear understanding on how the updates is gonna work with Windows...
say for example when Apollo is gonna come....will be exclusive to the newer devices alone or would it be available exclusively for the devices having 512mb ram or will it be pushed for all the devices...
I m sure many have this doubt....I myself being one...Will be awesome if someone could really help out !!!

My add-on question is: will it be up to the device OEM to make the updates available to the carriers, and then the carriers making the updates available to the customers (as it was previously on WM6 and older)?

My understanding is most, if not all, phones will be updated. If any phones don't get the update I would guess it would be the low end phones like the Lumia 610 and ZTE Orbit.

Pretty sure it was said that all phones will get the update, but some features won't work if the phone doesn't physically support them, like a front facing camera and NFC.

FFC is already supported in Mango, but yes, some features are going to be left out. Hopefully they're able to create overlap between the old gen and the new gen as much as possible

Nope! As far as I know, Microsoft makes updates available to the carriers, and then the carriers have the right to refuse only 1 update before they have to get back on the update trail. It's kind of stupid, but it's how they're going about it

Not necessarily. With Android, there's no guarantee, even with the Nexus devices, for getting major updates. Windows Phone at least guarantees you get an update, although it may not come as fast as you'd like.

Good info. Thanks for sharing. I knew MS had to change that as it makes them look bad when it's really the carriers. Thanks for standing your ground MS.

No problem, the update path is a nice, if not tedious, middle ground between iOS and Android. I do wish it fell more on the Apple side of things, though!

Right. I just finished reading a review on ArsTechnica, and the upgrade/patches for Windows Phone & the Lumia were what took the phone from a recommend to a not recommend. They didn't feel Microsoft was being as demanding as they should be in their updates (not as in control as Apple is). It's worth a read.

I do agree that Microsoft should be in full control, but to remove a recommendation for AT&T's flagship phone that will get priority updates first is kind of ridiculous. It's not going to be left behind!

AT&T is slightly slow to send out the updates !!! In fact I am not sure if they have had their S2 updated.....
on the other hand i do agree with the recommendations......In fact I have seen sites stating the same as an obvious advantage over the others...

Again apple's side is better...I was amazed by how fast the 5.1 update was adopted by its users.....MS should definitely do the same...

I think Microsoft is appeasing the carriers to even consider and sell Windows Phones before trying to become the Alpha dog that bullies the carriers into updating phones. The situation can only improve when Microsoft gains some marketshare and starts using their power as leverage

mmm never thought from that perspective...but anyways I still hope that Microsoft does not bully anyone even after it becomes the alpha...bullying never brings anything good...

Well, they are Microsoft, so playing like the eternal alphadog will hurt Windows Phone in the long run
