Microsoft plasters Time Square with giant Surface ad

Microsoft is taking Surface very seriously. We’ve seen graffiti ads popping up from one end of the country to the other, and lately we’ve started to see some more traditional ads. Now we are seeing an ad in the ultimate advertising location: Time Square. Time Square in New York is essentially a canvas for ads. The buildings are covered in billboards and neon signs from dozens of different companies, including Microsoft.

The Surface ad appears on a corner. We see Surface tablet hovering over a touch keyboard with the familiar slogan “click in”. As per usual there is no price or release date listed in the ad, but that is not the goal of these ads. Microsoft is simply trying to build some buzz. Will it work? Price will probably be the ultimate decider in whether or not Surface is successful, but a few well placed ads never hurt.

I think it is a massive mistake to hide price and international availability. Right now I’ve got to start looking at other options because I have no idea if the UK will have them, when they might have them and how much they might cost.

You could think they’re hiding the price for two reasons - it’s going to be rather expensive or it’s going to be filthy cheap! I doubt this product is going to be subsidised to shift units, and frankly I’d rather it wasn’t - so long as the asking price is a fair price for the device! If the price is cheap then maybe the product isn’t as premium as we’re led to believe? Too expensive and I’ll look elsewhere (and be quite sad about it I’d imagine).
