Hey guys, remember a few months ago when I told you about the Surface phone and then Stephen Elop said publically that there was no indication that Microsoft was working on such a device? Well, he seems to be sticking to his guns, but with a new addendum. In an investor call today, Elop said of the Surface phone, “It’s certainly a stimulant to the ecosystem.” Additionally, when asked whether a Surface phone would be seen as a competitor, Elop stated:
“We’re encouraging of HTC and Samsung and Microsoft or whomever to have devices in the market and to be making whatever investments that helps spur the ecosystem on.”
These are interesting statements from the CEO of a company who has reported losses for six consecutive quarters. One has to wonder if Elop believes that Microsoft has Nokia’s best interests in heart, given all the favoritism in the Windows Phone ecosystem so far. Will that favoritism run out once Microsoft is producing its own hardware? Only time will tell.
