Windows Phone Store has published over 126,000 apps

The Windows Phone Store is slowly growing as we reach the plateau shortly before Windows Phone 8 becomes publicly available. So far the store has published 126,000 apps since it became available in 2010. This estimate includes apps that have been removed by either Microsoft or the developer, so an estimated 113,000 to 120,000 are still currently available on the marketplace.

Microsoft has recently cracked down on the type and number of submissions to the store in an effort to clean it up for WP8. A revised list of guidelines was sent out to developers just a few months ago detailing what is acceptable and what is not in terms of descriptions and naming conventions. This is where Microsoft famously asked developers to refrain from using the word ‘metro’ in names and descriptions for their apps. It took Windows Phone only 20 months to reach this number, while Android took 26 and iOS took 18.5. In the scheme of things, Windows Phone seems to be growing well.

It’s sad that we determine an OS’s success by the number of apps it offers. Why does there need to be 1,000 different apps for Texas Holdem? 2,000 Connect-Four games? 2,000 differnet apps for a calculator? 3,000 differnet apps for note taking and to-do lists??? So unnecessary.
