Windows Phone 7.5 users not only had to wait a long time for the 7.8 update, but now that it’s here it is not all it’s cracked up to be. The main issue lies with the live tiles. Many people have reported that the live tiles in 7.8 simply don’t work. This is obviously a big issue considering how important live tiles are to Windows Phone. Microsoft has been quiet on the topic…until today.
Microsoft Principal Developer Support Escalation, Mark Chamberlain, had this to say in the MSDN forum:
An update: this issue has been recorded and the problem is understood. There are actually two issues:
- Live tile causing continuous web requests (and side effects such as battery drain)
- Live tile failing to update.
The fixes will be considered for inclusion in an update to the phone operating system. In the forum post above, several posters have been able to get around the problem by unpinning and repinning the live tiles. This might be a temporary workaround.
Microsoft has delayed the 7.8 update for a lot of phones to hopefully solve this problem. For those that already received the update they will have to wait longer for a fix. The good news is that Microsoft knows about the issue. Now it’s just a matter of how long it takes to fix.
