Official YouTube app back in the Windows Phone Store with Google’s blessing

Youtube-for-Windows-Phone

Several months ago Microsoft surprised us with an “official” YouTube app for Windows Phone. Unfortunately they didn’t make it with Google’s permission, and quickly afterwards it was removed from the Store. Since then Microsoft and Google have been working on an update for the app. Today it has finally arrived, and surprisingly it doesn’t suck.

The newly published app is almost identical to the previous version. The only feature that doesn’t seem to have made the cut is the ability to download videos, but that was expected. But while you can’t download videos, you can upload them. A new option can be found in the app menu and sharing menu in the OS to upload videos. No longer do you need Nokia’s app.

We have to hand it to Google on this one. We fully expected a stripped down version of the app after Google got their hands on it, but they actually added a really useful feature. The new YouTube app is available now for free on Windows Phone 8 and 7.

EDIT: Apparently you can only upload when connected to WiFi and charging your phone. Lame.

Actually, you CAN upload over data plan as well. You need to go into settings and in the “Upload video over” setting, select “Any” instead of “Wi-Fi”
