The Nokia Normandy is back. After a brief hiatus from the rumor wire Nokia’s Android phone is back in the news. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Nokia will unveil the Normandy later this month at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. We’ve been speculating for a long time about whether this phone would ever see the light of day. It appears the Normandy will live among us after all.
The Journal confirms previous reports that Nokia will be using a forked version of Android for the Normandy. This is the same strategy Amazon uses for their Kindle tablets. Since it will be forked the Normandy won’t have access to the Google Play Store or any of Google’s apps. Nokia will have their own store with apps like Skype, Twitter, and exclusive Nokia apps.
The UI, which has been leaked before, is a weird mash-up of Asha and Windows Phone. The Normandy is a low-end device with specs similar to the Lumia 520: 4-inch display, dual-core processor, 5MP camera, 4GB of storage, and 512MB of RAM.
