Microsoft building between 3-5 million Surface tablets for Q4

Microsoft opened Surface RT pre-orders today and the tech world has been abuzz with both positive comments about the design and negative comments about the pricing structure. Regardless of how you feel about the Surface, Microsoft is obviously going full steam ahead, as the WSJ is reporting that Microsoft placed an order for 3 to 5 million of the tablets to be built for Q4 2012. This production order is similar in units to the production orders commanded by both Amazon and Google for the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 respectively.

So far the Surface RT is the only version of the Surface that will be available this year, meaning Microsoft hopes to sell a significant chunk of its stock before it places a production order for the Surface Pro which is scheduled to be available some time next year.
