HVGA Resolution Coming To Windows Phone 7 (We Don’t Care)

I’ll admit it: I’m a mobile phone snob. I like the latest and greatest. I want to have the newest, shiniest, and most powerful device with the coolest new features. The playing field will start pretty level with Windows Phone 7 Series, at least in the display department, as Microsoft is requiring all hardware partners to ship with a 800 x480 pixel WVGA display. That’ll also make it easier for developers who don’t have to deal with designing for multiple resolutions.

At MIX10 however, Charlie Kindel of Microsoft mentioned that in the future there will be versions of Windows Phone 7 with HVGA resolution. That’s 480 x 320 pixel resolution and a spec that most would consider fall into the mid-to-low range handset realm. It’s an important note to make because it shows Microsoft is trying to target/blanket all segments, but it’s not a segment that we (and likely you) are interested in.
