A much debated source of contention for current Windows Phone users is whether or not the Windows Phone 7.8 update will contain anything more than the new start screen. So far, that’s all Microsoft has announced as official, though the company has been mum about confirming anything else in the face of additional questions. It’s interesting to note that despite being only a few months away, the company seems to be toying with the idea of what it should be giving its current, loyal supporters. Many of you want to see the new IE10 available for devices like the Lumia 900 and the HTC Titan II, which launched a little under three months ago.
In a recent TechEd 2012 speech, Senior Product Manager Larry Lieberman gave a hasty answer that will give some pause to those who believe Microsoft is giving current users the new start screen and nothing more.
“Will Windows Phone 7.8 get new features as well that you can access as a developer? Maybe. We haven’t announced it yet.
All we’ve announced is the new Start screen at this point. Sorry, nothing new to announce. You’re asking me stuff I can’t answer.”
This answer is not the firm no one would expect if the company has decided not to provide any additional features. Either Microsoft is still on the fence about what should go in the update, or they’re keeping quiet to keep from enraging their current loyal adopters. How do you feel about Microsoft’s silence and continued refusal to answer any questions on the subject? Do you think the company will do the right thing by the thousands of people who adopted only a few months ago to find out their devices won’t be supported within six months?
