Nokia has announced today that it has been continually expanding its Destination Maps service, an indoor mapping project. The company has now mapped 4,605 different locations across the globe, including malls, retail stores, airports and transit hubs in more then 38 countries. Nokia seemed to attack Google’s indoor mapping project in a statement that claims its Destination Maps are more than just a 2D floor plan in a statement on the Nokia blog:
Nokia Destination Maps content enables a full end-to-end experience, making the exploration and discovery of indoor places more realistic. Further, Destination Maps include a wealth of interior map attributes, like escalators, floor levels, ATMS and restrooms. Including these important points allows for more advanced and accurate guidance and routing.
Destination Maps will be added to Nokia Maps soon so that Nokia devices will be able to take advantage of the service immediately. With Windows Phone 8 relying on Nokia’s mapping data, it behooves the company to make sure their mapping services are up to par with Google.
