Remember Intel’s Atom processor that fueled a whole generation of netbooks that quickly died out after the release of the iPad? Well, the low-power processor could be making a comeback in the form of Windows 8 tablets. Intel CEO Paul Otellini announced 20 Windows 8 tablets today that are based on Clover Trail Atom. In addition to this announcement, more than 140 different Ivy Bridge ultrabooks will hit the shelves in the next fiscal year, including touch-enabled computers and convertible machines.
If the announcement of new tablets and ultrabooks isn’t enough to excite you, then perhaps $699 ultrabooks are. For some time now the ceiling on most ultrabooks has been right at the $1,000 mark. These thin and light laptops are designed to compete directly with the Macbook Air, but have still remained unaffordable given that many laptops with better specs but bulkier forms are had for less.
