The i-mate Intelegent is a phone that runs Windows 8

Read the title one more time. That’s right, a phone that runs Windows 8. The i-mate Intelegent is the first phone that we’ve seen that runs Windows 8, and that makes it a very interesting device to say the least. The i-mate Intelegent looks like a concept someone with Photoshop might whip up in their free time, but apparently this is a very real device. So what the heck is it?

Well, basically the i-mate Intelegent is a phone that runs Windows 8. Full Windows 8, we might add, not Windows RT. It runs Windows 8 by having an Intel Z2760 Clover Trail processor. This allows the Intelegent to do some very interesting things. i-mate promises a docking station that would turn the phone into a full-blown desktop workstation. A couple other companies have tried something like this (Motorola), but Windows is clearly the best choice for pulling it off.

Right now the Intelegent only exists in renders, but we do know specs for the device. It has a 4.7-inch display at 1280×768 resolution, 2GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, 3000mAh battery, 8MP camera, wireless charging, and that Intel Clover Trail processor. If you’re wondering if that processor is enough to power full Windows 8 it is the same processor used in the Samsung ATIV Smart PC and Acer Iconia W510.

The original plans for the Itelegent had it being shown off at MWC this year. Obviously that has come and gone, so the device is in limbo right now.The hardware still needs to be finalized and i-mate doesn’t have any partners or launch plans yet. This device could very well be vaporware, but we can hope it becomes real some day.

  • This is what Nokia should be focused on…

I have always said it. Microsoft will be the one to REALLY blend the line between mobile and desktop. Windows is just too strong to not take advantage of it! I can’t wait to see more of this.

Wait…. so will it not run Windows Phone 8 apps? That’s a big issue, if it can’t. I don’t want to be using full desktop apps all the time.

  • If it runs full Windows 8 then it won’t be able to run phone apps.

It needs some sort of dual-boot solution, then. I am not in.

Windows 8 on an atom processor. This should be a nasty disaster. I would like to see it run a Linux based os. Windows is just too heavy. A light weight customized Linux distro would be much better for a task like this. I have windows 7 on my core 2 duo desktop and it struggles while Linux mint flies.

I have the ACER w500 it runs windows 8 like a champ.
VERY little performance diffrence in OS/WEB/OFFICE on a w500 (with a c60 2gigs of ram) and my Quismo (quad core i7 with 12 gigs of ram).
From what i hear the new Atom beats out the c60 so….this is a VERY interesting device if it ever sees the light of day.
Windows 8s runs SO MUCH better then windows 7 did on the c-60 powered tablet

I have used Imate Pocket PC (Windows Phone 4) since its release. Imate did introduce real OS/smartphone while other phone makers where with 4-5 line display colour phones. Those days I created phone apps for PocketPC and it worked like charm.

If app developer develops only for phone and not for full Windows - he is the loser not Windows.

Intelegent is practical and Imate will again come another round. Hope this comes with affordable pricing with PixelSense so we have another choice other than Samsung/Nokia phones.
