Microsoft is hoping that Windows Phone will surpass Apple in China’s smartphone market with the release of Tango devices that will see affordable smartphones flood the market. The initial goal is to surpass Apple before taking on Google says Microsoft’s chairman and CEO of the Greater China region, Simon Leung. No time frame was given for reaching these goals.

Of course, China is the world’s largest market for smartphone users, which makes it crucial for the burgeoning Windows Phone operating system to succeed. According to research company IDC, shipments to the country for smartphones will finally exceed the US, which may lead handset manufacturers to focus more on what Chinese consumers want from their devices, instead of the United States and Europe.

With 2012 just beginning, it will be interesting to see just how well Windows Phone will perform this year.
