Windows Phone passes Blackberry for the first time in smartphone shipments

Windows Phone 822

It’s official, Windows Phone has finally passed Blackberry. IDC has just released their quarterly look at the smartphone market, and for the first time Windows Phone is in 3rd place. Microsoft has been trailing Blackberry for a long time, but finally the tide has turned.

In Q1 of 2013 Windows Phone accounted for 3.2 percent of all smartphones shipped, Blackberry accounted for just 2.9 percent. That is almost a complete role reversal from Q4 of 2012; Windows Phone was at 2.6 percent while Blackberry had 3.2 percent. It’s still very obvious that Apple and Google are dominating the smartphone market. With just 3.2 percent being 3rd place there isn’t much room for a third contender.

Despite the big gap between 2nd and 3rd Microsoft is doing a good job of carving out some space in the smartphone market. As Blackberry continues to decline there will be more business users who look to Windows Phone for their new smartphone. With all the new apps coming out, and now this news, the future for Windows Phone has never been better.
