Microsoft releases ‘Switch to Windows Phone’ app for Android and Windows Phone

There has been a lot of talk about “Switching” in the Windows Phone world lately. It’s a phrase that Nokia started with “Switch to Lumia,” and since then it has caught on as a phrase for the entire platform. One thing that can make it difficult to switch is apps. Microsoft has an answer for that.

Microsoft has released an app called Switch to Windows Phone for Android and of course Windows Phone. First you install it on your Android device and it scans all the apps installed and tries to find Windows Phone equivalents. It will tell you what percentage of apps it can match. The you sign in with your Microsoft account (or create one). Next comes the Windows Phone app.

First things you’ll do in the Windows Phone app is sign in to the same Microsoft account you used on Android. Then you will get a long list of apps that Microsoft thinks can replace your Android apps. There is a “Featured” section for some exact matches, and an “All” section for the rest. There will be a few that don’t match up at all. For example, it said an app called Apex Controller could replace Apex Launcher. It’s a pretty neat app if you have an Android device. It told me the battery was too low to use the app. I am sitting here at 45%. That charge will probably last until tonight. Not cool!

    What the heck?

    For reals.

On my android it was showing 82% compatibility, showing the icons for what was supported.. and a large chunk of them were apps I never installed or wanted. It seems a bit shady from that end, although I see the higher purpose they have behind it. They should really just show on android what windows phone can do and actually spell out the list without needing a windows phone to receive the data.

    Agreed.
